Lüneburg: Buddhadharma – don’t forget the beginning
The aim of the two evenings is to develop a deeper understanding of the significance and practical value of the teachings of Śrāvakayāna for one’s own Dharma path.
Quite a few Westerners who are at home in Tibetan Buddhism think that they should practise the ‘highest or greatest teachings’ as quickly as possible, forgetting that very fundamental insights arise from Śrāvakayāna. Therefore, we should not overlook or underestimate them, as they are also the foundation of our path.
Following the structure of the Four Noble Truths, we will first deal with the various forms of dissatisfaction and restlessness that pervade our minds, whether subtly or obviously. When we investigate their causes, we encounter the deeply rooted idea of a fixed, permanent self with which we identify in the skandhas. In the second part, we will then turn to the aspects of the path, in particular the Noble Eightfold Path. Finally, we will discuss how these foundations are essential for our path in Mahāyāna and Vajrayāna.
