Relative bodhichitta is the development of love and compassion and a very effective method for accumulating merit. Absolute bodhichitta gives rise to an understanding of what the mind is in its pure, original state, whereby we first practise the analytical view and then, as we progress, gain direct insight.
Together, these two aspects of bodhichitta complement each other and result in a powerful practice.
